Real Jade Jewellery and Objects

Real jade jewellery, in jadeite or in nephrite, chosen one piece at a time for its colour and for the way it holds up day to day. Bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants, earrings, and a few jade objects to keep close at hand.

Here the word real has a precise meaning: every piece carries the name of its mineral, and I weigh one example as soon as the stone reaches me unset. How I go about it.

Six Families, One Single Stone

The whole shop is given over to jade, and to nothing else. That is what makes it possible to take each form as far as it will go: the bangle cut from a single block, the strand of beads you roll under your fingers, the cabochon that takes the light, the pierced disc worn against the skin.

Bracelets
Solid bangles, strands of round or barrel beads, from water green to deep green. The jade piece above all others.
Rings
Cabochons set on 925 silver or on gilt metal, and bands cut from a single piece, with no metal at all.
Necklaces
Strands of beads in the hollow of the throat, stones on a fine chain. Jade at its closest to the face, where its green shows best.
Pendants
Laughing Buddha, pierced disc, dragon: motifs China has been cutting in jade for centuries, and plain polished drops.
Earrings
Light, they move with every turn of the head. No size to choose: the simplest gift in the shop.
Objects
Rollers, gua sha, pebbles and carvings: the jade that is not worn, but kept within reach.

Green Jade Jewellery, and Far More Than Green

Green is the colour you expect, and the shop runs through the whole range of it. The clear, bright green of jadeite comes from chromium; spinach green, deeper and more muted, belongs to nephrite, and comes from iron. Between the two sit water greens that are almost translucent, and moss greens that shift from one bead to the next. The true green of jade.

But jade is not only green. You will also find porcelain whites, a rare and warm honey yellow, and a deep black. To see a single colour, click the Refine button above the grid and choose one. Every colour of jade.

Real Jade Jewellery, and What That Word Means Here

Jade is one of the most imitated stones there is. Serpentine and dyed quartzite are very often sold under its name; they look like it to the eye and have nothing in common with it. The false names of jade.

The difference can be measured, with a set of scales and a glass of water. Every mineral has its own density, and jade is markedly heavier than its imitations:

Values from the mineralogical literature, in g/cm³. The last two rows are the materials most often sold under the name jade.
MaterialDensity
Jadeite3.25 to 3.36
Nephrite2.90 to 3.03
Serpentineabout 2.6
Quartzite, dyed or notabout 2.65

Every listing carries a panel, the record for that reference: the mineral, its density when it has been measured, and the date of the weighing. The method, with its limits, and how to check for yourself.

What the scales do not say: treatment. They establish the mineral, not a possible impregnation with resin. Only a laboratory analysis would settle that, which is why treatment status is given as not determined on every listing.

Jadeite or Nephrite, Two Jades for Two Uses

The word jade covers two distinct minerals. Jadeite is often the more translucent and the more brilliant: it is the one that gives the vivid greens and the luminous cabochons. Nephrite is the tougher of the two, made of interlocking fibres that absorb knocks: it is the ideal stone for beads worn every day, and for objects. What sets them apart.

Choosing, Giving, and Getting It Right

For a bracelet or a ring, size matters more than anywhere else: a stone bangle does not open, and a stone ring cannot be resized. Every listing that needs one offers a choice of size above the buy button, and the guide explains how to measure in two minutes. The size guide.

To give a piece without knowing the size, think of pendants, necklaces and earrings. Giving a piece of jade jewellery, and for a man, the pieces that suit him best.

Jade Stone Jewellery, Made to Be Worn

A piece of jade stone jewellery is not an ornament for a display cabinet. Jade is tough: it stands up to everyday life better than most jewellery stones. Its hardness, on the other hand, remains ordinary, and dust will eventually dull the polish of a piece that is badly stored.

What follows changes register, and I flag it rather than blending it into the rest. Nothing here is proven: these are uses and beliefs that traditions have attributed to jade, and I report them because they are part of its history.

In China, jade has been the stone of the moral virtues since Confucius: uprightness, constancy, restraint. The virtues attributed to jade, told honestly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Your Jewellery Made of Real Jade?

Every piece is sold under the name of its mineral, jadeite or nephrite, the only two the word jade denotes. I weigh one example as soon as the stone reaches me unset, and the listing publishes the result with its date. As long as the weighing has not been done, the listing says so plainly. The method.

What Is the Difference Between Jadeite and Nephrite?

They are two unrelated minerals, both of them called jade. Jadeite is harder, more translucent and gives the vivid greens; nephrite is tougher and gives mainly the deep greens, the whites and the yellows. The detail.

Is Your Jewellery Treated?

Treatment status is given as not determined on every listing: weighing establishes the mineral, but only a laboratory analysis would say whether a stone has been impregnated. As a precaution, avoid heat, ultrasonic cleaners and solvents. The information page.

How Do I Choose the Right Size?

For a ring, the French size is your finger circumference in millimetres. For a bead bracelet, it is your wrist circumference; for a bangle, it is the width of your closed hand. Measure at the end of the day, and when in doubt, go for the next size up. The size guide.

What Are the Delivery Times and Costs?
